Dow and Deep C cooperate to build the first road from plastic scrap in Vietnam

The cooperation project promotes the circular economy in Vietnam through the construction of roads made from recycled plastic, and at the same time developing the output market for plastic waste.
Hanoi, Vietnam – April 17, 2019 – Dow and DEEP C signed a Cooperation Agreement to build the first road from recycled plastic at DEEP C Industrial Complex in Hai Phong City, Vietnam. The project is carried out with the purpose of recycling used plastic packaging that is indiscriminately thrown or buried into materials to build stronger and more sustainable roads.
The first one-kilometer test track, scheduled for completion in September 2019, will convert nearly 4 tons of flexible plastic packaging – the equivalent of approximately 1 million plastic packages used by Dow customers in regional areas. provided in the vicinity. Once completed, this new road will be evaluated by Vietnam Maritime University before expanding the project to the entire industrial complex.
“Dow is strongly committed to ending plastic waste, including finding innovative solutions to turn plastic waste into new products,” said Mr. Ekkasit Lakkananithiphan, General Director of Dow Vietnam. “We have built more than 90 kilometers of roads from plastic waste in India, Indonesia, Thailand and the United States and this is also the foundation for us to implement the application,” said using this project in Vietnam.”
Announced in 2015, promoting a circular economy was identified as one of the Dow Sustainability Goals for 2025. Roads created from recycled plastic are proof that plastic waste has the potential to become a valuable renewable resource, contributing to the development of the plastic circular economy. The plastic waste used in this project is mainly used plastic packaging, such as polyethylene film. After cleaning, drying and crushing, the resin is mixed with bitumen at a temperature of about 150 to 180oC. At this temperature, the plastic is completely melted, mixed with the asphalt, helping to improve the durability of the road. Roads made from recycled plastic also have the ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by partially replacing the bitumen required in asphalt.
“DEEP C is a pioneer in building and transforming traditional industrial parks into eco-industrial parks,” said Mr. Do Quang Hung, First Deputy General Director of DEEP C HP I and III/Cong Dinh Vu Industrial Park Joint Stock Company said. “One of the main goals of the eco-industrial park initiative is to promote industrial symbiosis to reduce industrial waste.”
The project will attract local authorities, waste collectors and the plastic industry value chain to work together to solve problems related to marine and plastic waste in Vietnam, and at the same time develop an investment market. out better for plastic waste. This cross-industry collaboration demonstrates the organizations’ commitment to promoting the circular economy, as well as reducing the amount of waste released into the environment.
“The circular economy is known as a solution to long-term prosperity, sustainability and environmental friendliness,” said Nguyen Quang Vinh, General Secretary of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Vice President. Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VCCI-VBCSD) said. “As one of our priorities is realizing the Sustainable Development Goals at VCCI-VBCSD, we consider Dow’s initiative to be a huge and powerful contribution to reducing plastic waste. , and more in transforming urban transport in Vietnam”.
Vietnam is currently one of the countries with the leading amount of plastic waste, in which urban areas such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are estimated to have about 80 tons of plastic waste discharged into the environment every day. .
